American Legion Hosts Flag Retirement Ceremony

American Legion Post #286 held their annual Flag Retirement ceremony on Monday - Flag Day.

Approximately 13,000 flags that had become worn or tattered were retired by burning, the proper way to dispose of an American Flag that has outlived its usefulness.

"It took about 30 people two days to hang the flags," said American Legion Post Commander Keith Sage. "Then we soaked then with 30-50 gallons of kerosene"

Sage said he believed that the Post has conducted the ceremony every year since 1968. The Post did not hold the ceremony in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Billows of smoke rose hundreds of feet into the air and could be seen throughout the city and beyond.
